VTOL or vertical takeoff and landing, is different from a regular airplane since it does not need to use an airport to be able to fly. A VTOL plane can take you exactly to your point of destination from your point of origin because of its vertical takeoff and landing capabilities. This is different from a local flight where you have to go to an airport, then the plane will fly you to another airport, then you take a car to your real destination. The construction of VTOL is not as easy as a conventional winged plane. It is more difficult technically. It has many more benefits. Here are the advantages of VTOL.
With VTOL, you can take off and land in many more places than a regular plane that requires an airport. You don’t have to go to and from the airport which saves you much time and fuel. If we measure that average distance anyone has to travel to reach the nearest airport, we get 17 miles. If you use a VTOL plane, you don’t need to go to an airport, since there are areas less than a mile from your home where a VTOL plane can take off or land. You don’t have to travel 17 miles if you take a VTOL plane.
You get a faster and more efficient plane in a VTOL. This is because regular aircrafts use their wings for takeoff and landing. A large wing produces drag. And drag increases with speed. There is more drag due to wing friction. The airplane then flies slower but it is burning more fuel. VTOL wings, on the other hand, are not used for takeoff and landing. They were designed strictly for speed and efficiency. Because VTOL components do not cause drag, you get a faster and more efficient plane.
It is during takeoff and landing that planes are at high risk of accidents. These are the most dangerous parts of a flight. The safest point in a plane ride is when the plane is cruising at high altitudes. The margin for error when the plane is close or rolling on the ground at high speeds is very low so any mistakes can be very dangerous. This is why takeoff and landings are very dangerous despite having vast space in airfields. This does not happen with VTOL planes because of their vertical takeoff and landing. The risk is reduced since a VTOL plane accelerates and decelerates in the air.
