Stem Cell Research

Stem cells play an important role in regenerative medicine. This is due to their critical role in the treatment of many complex diseases and injuries. You shall see so much promise in stem cell research, and even more controversy the subject can raise.
Stem cells are unique dells in the human body capable of changing into different types of cells, such as muscle cells, organ cells, as well as brain cells. You will hear of two types of stem cells; embryonic stem cells, and adult stem cells. Embryonic stem cells originate from unused human embryos, and serve well in research. These embryos are developed via in vitro fertilization. You shall see them change into many different types of cells. Adult stem cells are more limited in transformation, and thus can only become one of two types. They are gotten from fully developed tissue, such as in bone marrow, skin and brain.
Seeing as stem cells can become other cells, stem cell therapy works to using them to replace ones damaged or dysfunctional. Here are cases in which this has been possible.
Damaged corneas have been repaired in this process before. There shall be harvesting of stem cells in the limbus, that area of the eye between the iris and sclera. These will be multiplied in the lab thereafter. Once they hit a desirable number, they will be put back into the damaged eye, thus giving you your sight back.
There is now replacement of skin for those who have gone through a life-threatening burn. Skin stem cells will be harvested and used to make new sheets of skin which will go to cover the areas damaged by the burns. Research is being done to see how the new skin can be developed to have hair, sweat glands, and oil glands.
Stem cells have also proven beneficial in eliminating the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. In cases where the dopamine-producing regions of your brain have their neurons damaged, you will suffer tremors, slow movement, the rigidity of the limbs, balance and gait issues, alterations in their speech and writing. When stem-cell regeneration happens, you will get new dopamine-inducing neurons to cover up the damaged ones.
Chemotherapy may be necessary for treating cancer, but it leaves you with destroyed stem cells. When the chemo is over, it is important to have new stem cells put back into your body. They shall head to the bone marrow, to grow and develop into healthy blood cells.
There are even more areas where stem cell therapy is beneficial, such as for treating the damage heart complications like heart attacks cause. These examples point out the need to support stem cell research. You shall learn more about the subject on this site.
